Executive Function Coaching
Many parents come to call me after they have received some testing back and see that their child needs an executive functioning coach. Others call me because they know their child is smart and struggling, but just can’t put their finger on an issue that feels amorphous. Still, others call me because they are struggling with a load of life and parenting, and they want to help themselves set up systems to take the load off of their executive functioning. Whatever the reason, most people call me having no understanding of what they need for themselves or their children. They just know something needs to change.
I am here to say that we live in an ever-increasingly complicated world that asks more and more from us. I have been working in education for decades, and the demands on our young people are exponentially harder than they were when I first began this work. As a working parent myself and a professional who speaks to many other parents, the demands feel just as overwhelming for adults, with our attention being fractured by constant interruptions and stream of communication that feels like a fire hose. We all need to harness the power of our executive functions better, while also finding ways to create more automaticity around the skills and behaviors that take a load off of our frontal lobes. Executive functioning coaching is unique to each individual, but I follow a very clearly crafted path of my own creation to bring my clients the support they need as they build new skills and even new attitudes about themselves and their work.
